A historical mission: the transport of the statue of Julius Caesar to Geneva
In September 2019, Friderici Special contributed to a historic but also titanic challenge. The Swiss transport company was in charge of transporting and installing the cast of the statue of Julius Caesar to the University of Geneva (UNIGE). The teams worked hard to complete this extremely precise task. A look back at this extraordinary achievement!
A unique work of art: the casting of the statue of Julius Caesar?
Millennia later, Julius Caesar returned to Geneva. In 58 BC, the Roman emperor had established a military camp in the Swiss city. At war with the Gauls, the region and the Rhone played a key role in the Gallic War! However, in the 1st century B.C., the city of Nyon had a greater influence than Geneva, which was then only a small town. Since its creation in 1979, the Roman Museum of Nyon has proudly displayed the statue of Julius Caesar. Along the esplanade, visitors could admire this historical work of art made of cement mixed with marble powder. However, this open-air exhibition alters the materials. The Roman Museum of Nyon therefore decided to make a new replica in a more weather-resistant material. The old casting had to find another location, allowing it to join its new quarters in Geneva.
A delicate transport led by a masterful hand by Friderici Special
A few months ago, the cast of the statue of Julius Caesar made its way to the Collection des moulages of the University of Geneva. Friderici Special was able to carry out the delicate transport of the historical work of art. The crane truck came very close to lift and load the 3.5 ton structure. Customized management was applied to this exceptional project. The transport and unloading was a success thanks to the expertise and meticulousness of the teams. Thanks to the know-how of Friderici Special, the casting was placed on the Geneva soil and safely installed in its new quarters. Millennia later, the Roman emperor has once again travelled the 25 kilometers between the two cities!
The triumphant return of Julius Caesar to Geneva
Since September 30, 2019, the artwork has been on display in front of the Casting Collection. Visitors, students and teaching staff can now admire this exceptional statue. The symbol of Swiss history!
Friderici Special is proud of this beautiful project and thanks the University of Geneva (UNIGE) for their trust and collaboration.
